As far back as I can remember...

I’ve always had a love for film. From an early age I remember being parked in front of the tele watching re-runs of Hercules, Cool Runnings and The Mummy, fixated on the screen and magic that was unfolding before me. In truth, movies were all about escapism for me; growing up in a tiny, time-capsule of a town in Ireland, my only doorway to excitement came from movies and boy did I take full advantage of this. In many ways, without realising, I was beginning to form my taste in film.

Although that being said, my taste in film has definitely changed and if you listen to the podcast (I mean of course you do, it’s bloody great) then I’m sure you’re well aware, I’ve a penchant for serious, gritty, auteur-driven cinema. I put this down to my early exposure to films like Reservoir Dogs, Goodfellas and True Romance. If Disney fuelled my childhood, Tarantino and Scorsese shaped my adolescence and it was their filmographies, along with the likes of Gilliam and Kubrick’s that inspired me to study film at university. Where I met my two pod-pals, shot my first few short-films and continued to nurture my ever-growing love for cinema.

I’m desperate to continue making films, writing about them and discussing every detail on the only film podcast that matters. Some day I’ll make it to Empire…

For me, it's all about heart...

Movies with a good heart will always capture my imagination. It’s probably why I love coming-of-age films and romantic comedies so much (both need a huge dose of sincerity and a smattering of cheese to work properly). There’s nothing like watching something lovely, something delightful and joyous. My favourite film is the Richard Curtis movie About Time because it is all of those things. There’s a charm to these types of films that I think comes from the pure innocence of the characters and the themes. Put simply: they’re boss.

I’m not a movie snob, though, unless it comes to comedy. I love comedy films and the craft fascinates me. But anything other than comedy and I can be there for a film pretty easily. As I’ve grown older my love for both a) action films and b) films I can watch on the sofa, on a Sunday, whilst playing Football Manager, hungover, has increased. These ‘Sunday FM’ films must be a) easy to follow b) thoroughly enjoyable and c) something you’ve seen maybe 5 times previous.

Massive animation fan. Seen Jurassic World maybe 30 times.

I am a sucker for the cinema

I’ve been going almost once a week since before I can remember. The ginormous screen, the cold air conditioning and…THE POPCORN. My memories of cinema fly back to when I was just five-years-old, going with my dad to watch Die Another Die and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. I was experiencing the awesome James Bond and magical Gandalf on the big screen before I knew my times tables. Crazy right?

I have always needed a world to escape to on the ‘big screen’. This escapism has played a massive part in my love of a movie franchise; be it Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Star Wars, The Twilight Saga (I know) or Bond. More recently my attention has turned to the MCU. I haven’t been quite as excited for a film than I was for Avengers: Endgame - one of the most captivatingly brilliant cinema experiences I’ve had. EVER.

Franchises aren’t my only escapism, though. Over the last few years my taste has matured somewhat. I am just as likely to see a low budget indie flick as I am to see the latest Marvel. Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash was probably the film that changed my perception of cinema. Since then, I have been far more open to anything and everything and now my love for film has never been greater.

Guilty pleasure: Musicals.
